## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AT ABOUT 0930 ON FEBRUARY 20, 2002, A CESSNA 172, N238NY WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED WHEN IT IMPACTED TREES DURING A GO-AROUND FOLLOWING A SIMULATED FORCED LANDING OVER A GRASS STRIP. THE LOCAL FLIGHT WAS THE FIRST LESSON TOWARD THE PILOT'S INSTRUMENT RATING AND WAS ALSO A CHECK-OUT IN THE CESSNA 172 AIRCRAFT. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT CLOSED THE THROTTLE TO SIMULATE AN ENGINE FAILURE AND THE STUDENT SET UP TO LAND ON THE GRASS STRIP, WHEN THE GO-AROUND WAS BEGUN, THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND TREES WERE CONTACTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW02LA082](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW02LA082), Feb 20, 2002: Cessna 172M (N238NY), Mount Selman, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: the loss of engine power for an undetermined reason, which resulted in a forced landing. A factor was the lack of suitable terrain for the forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
