## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) N274SK OPERATED BY CHAUTAUQUA AIRLINES AS AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 5787 DEPARTED LINCOLN, NE ENROUTE TO ST. LOUIS, MO, AND RETURNED TO LINCOLN DUE TO A SMOKE ALARM IN THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT. THE AIRCRAFT HAD DEPARTED 15 MINUTES EARLIER WHEN THE CAPTAIN RECEIVED A LEFT ENGINE BLEED AIR WARNING LIGHT THEN AN IMMEDIATE FIRE WARNING LIGHT IN THE CARGO COMPARTMENT. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO LINCOLN AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. CONTRACT MAINTENANCE FOUND THE HALON FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM ACTIVATED. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE BLEED AIR LINE FROM THE LEFT ENGINE TO A T FITTING BEHIND THE FIRE SUPRESSOR LINER IN THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT WAS MISALIGNED ALLOWING HOT BLEED AIR FROM THE LEFT ENGINE TO ESCAPE.
