## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DUE TO STRONG MOUNTAIN TURBULENCE CONDITIONS, THE PILOT ELECTED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY OFF-FIELD LANDING IN A FARM FIELD. DURING A RIGHT-TRAFFIC DOWNWIND-TO-BASE TURN, THE RIGHT WING TIP HIT SEVERAL TREETOPS. THE AIRCRAFT LOST CONTROL AND IMPACTED THE LANDING SITE NOSE FIRST.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD02LA036](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD02LA036), Mar 10, 2002: Schweizer SGS 1-26A (N3878A), Strausburg, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate evaluation of weather resulted in a loss of thermal lift, which resulted in an impact with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
