## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2002, A UNITED EXPRESS CL-600, N637BR, OPERATED BY ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES AS FLIGHT 601, RETURNED AND LANDED ON RUNWAY 23 AT THE BUFFALO NIAGARA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BUF) AFTER REPORTING SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND FIRE AND RESCUE RESPONDED. MAINTENANCE CONTROL RELEASED THE AIRCRAFT FOR A FERRY FLIGHT TO IAD. AT IAD, MAINTENANCE FOUND THE APU OIL TO BE OVERSERVICED. OIL WAS PROPERLY SERVICED AND THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM WAS INSPECTED AND OPERATED. NO DEFECT OR SMOKE WAS NOTED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS RETURNED TO SERVICE. THIS INCIDENT IS CONSIDERED CLOSED.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
