## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MARCH 25, 2002, AIRCRAFT WITH PILOT AND PASSENGER WAS HUNTING COYOTES APPROXIMATELY 24 MILES SE OF GLASGOW WHEN SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOTGUN INADVERTENTLY WENT OFF IN "FULL AUTO" 3-5 TIMES INTO BOTTOM OF THE RIGHT WING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS AT 40-50 FEET AGL AND THE PILOT INDICATED THAT HE LOST CONTROL AND AIRCRAFT IMMEDIATELY IMPACTED A NEAR DRY FROZEN RESERVOIR AND BURNED. ON SCENE INVESTIGATION FOUND A SINGLE INTACT SPENT 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN SHELL UPRIGHT IN THE SNOW ALONG AIRCRAFT'S FLIGHT PATH. 101 FEET LATER, A LARGE RADIUS OF SEVERAL DOZEN PIECES OF BURNED YELLOW FABRIC BEGAN THAT HAD RAINED DOWN AND MELTED IN THE SNOW. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED RIGHT WING FIRST IN NOSE DOWN ATTITUDE AND SLID 120 FEET ACROSS FROZEN SURFACE OF RESERVOIR. AIRCRAFT WAS CONSUMED BY FIRE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA02LA058](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA02LA058), Mar 25, 2002: Piper PA-18-150 (N22EV), Fort Peck, MT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inability to maintain aircraft control and foreign object damage to the aileron and wing. The restricted movement of the flight controls was a factor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
