## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) MR. SHERWIN REPORTED THAT HE WAS ATTEMPTING TO BACK TAXI HIS AIRCRAFT DOWN THE RUSSELL MUNICIPAL RWY 34 WHEN A CROSS WIND CAUGHT THE AIRCRAFT'S TAIL, SLID THE AIRCRAFT AT AN ANGLE TO THE RUNWAY, THEN LIFTED THE LEFT WING AND TIPPED THE AIRCRAFT OVER. HE ADVISED THAT THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT HAVE TOE BRAKES AND HE WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE FORCE OF THE WIND ON THE TAIL. FLIGHT SERVICE REPORTED THAT THE WIND AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WAS BETWEEN 340 TO 020 DEGREES AT 12 KNOTS GUSTING TO 17.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02LA098](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02LA098), Mar 29, 2002: Piper PA-22-150 (N6156D), Russell, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot failed to maintain control of the airplane during the back-taxi. Additional factors were the tailwind and the wind gust.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
