HIS GPS SHOWED MOUNTAIN VIEW, MO (MNF) AS THE NEAREST AIRPORT. HE TURNED TOWARD THE AIRPORT BUT WAS APPROXIMATELY 23 NM NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE AIRPORT WHEN HE HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A LIGHTLY WOODED CEILING. HE LANDED GEAR UP BECAUSE OF TERRAIN AND THE SMALL SIZE OF THE CLEARING. THE LEFT WING WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED. THE TAIL AND NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT FORWARD OF THE FIREWALL WERE RIPPED OFF THE AIRCRAFT. SUBSEQUENT, INVESTIGATION DISCLOSED THE AIRCRAFT HAD EXPERIENCED AIRWORTHINESS PROBLEMS AND HAD THE PROPELLER GEAR CASE REPAIRED.
