## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AFTER TAKEOFF FROM LINCOLN (LNK), NE, PILOT WAS HEADING WEST BOUND TOA PRACTICE AREA WHEN HE STARTED TO SMALL AN ELECTRICAL OVERHEATING ODOR. THE PILOT DECIDED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING TO INVESTIGATE THE PROBLEM. HE LANDED ON A COUNTRY ROAD WITHOUT INCIDENT TO EVALUATE THE PROBLEM. A MECHANIC WITH AN INSPECTION AUTHORIZATION RATING AND A CFI CERTIFICATE WAS ALONG FOR THE TRAINING MANEUVERS. AFTER LANDING, THE MECHANIC EVALUATED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THE BATTERY CABLE HAD COME LOOSE FROM A SECURING DEVICE ALONG THE LEFT LOWER ENGINE MOUNT. THE BATTERY CABLE THEN CAME INTO CONTACT WITH THE EXHAUST PIPE CAUSING THE HEAT SHIELD TO MELT THUS CAUSING THE WIRE TO ARC AND SHORT OUT. THE MECHANIC SECURED THE WIRE BACK TO THE ENGINE MOUNT AND INSULATED THE WIRE FOR SAFE FLIGHT. THE MECHANIC PERFORMED THE RUN-UP TO EVALUATE A RETURN TRIP TO LNK AND FOUND THE AIRCRAFT TO BE SATISFACTORY FOR SAFE FLIGHT. THE PILOT ENSURED THE ROADWAY WAS CLEAR AND TOOK OFF TO GO BACK TO LNK. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AT LNK.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
