## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) DURING INBOUND CRUISE FLIGHT FROM BIRMINGHAM, U.K. (BHX) TO ORLANDO-SANFORD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (SFB), FLORIDA, FLIGHT CREW NOTICED CENTER HYDRAULICS SYSTEM QUANTITY DROPPED TO 0.77. IN CONSULTATION WITH THEIR MAINTENANCE CONTROL THEY TURNED OFF THE CENTER HYDRAULIC PUMPS. FLUID CONTINUED TO DROP BUT THE FLAPS AND GEAR OPERATED NORMALLY. MEANWHILE, AT SFB THE CRASH/FIRE AND RESCUE (CFR) CREW WERE ON CATEGORY 2 ALERT AS A PRECAUTION. UPON MAKING WHAT TO BE A NORMAL LANDING AT SFB THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER REPORTED SMOKE ON THE LEFT MAIN GEAR. UPON THE FLIGHT CREW'S REQUEST THE CFR RESPONDED AND SPRAYED WATER ON THE LEFT GEAR. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SHUT DOWN AND TOWED TO THE GATE WITH NORMAL DISEMBARKATION, NO FUTHER INCIDENT. AN ON-SCENE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE #5 WHEEL BRAKE ASSEMBLY MAY HAD EXPERIENCED AN INTERNAL HYDRAULIC (LEAK) FAILURE. UPON LANDING AND APPLYING BRAKES THE EXPOSED HYDRAULIC FLUID SMOKED AND FUMED. THE CFR THEN SPRAYED COLD WATER ON THE HOT BRAKE - CAUSING A PIECE OF THE INBOARD SIDE BRAKE PLATE TO EMBRITTLE OR A PIECE TO BREAK OFF. THE #5 TIRE OR WHEEL ASSEMBLY DID NOT APPEARTO INCUR ANY DAMAGE. (CONTINUED ON ATTACHED SHEET).

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
