## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT WAS INVOLVED IN AERIAL PESTICIDE APPLICATION, OVER A HEAVILY FORESTED AREA FOR THE PURPOSE OF GYPSY MOTH CONTROL. HE STARTED HIS DUTY DAY AT 0600, AT 1235 EDT HE COMPLETED A SECTION AND WAS RETURNING TO BASE (EMPTY HOPPER) WHEN HE STRUCK HIGH POWER TENSION LINES. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE WIRES IN A LEFT WING DOWN ATTITUDE, THE STEEL CABLE SEVERED A 5 FOOT SECTION OF THE LEFT WING WHICH DEPARTED THE AIRCRAFT AND WAS LATER RECOVERED FROM THE RIVER BELOW. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED ON AND CRASHED IN ROCKY TERRAIN, THE AIRCRAFT AND PILOT WERE CONSUMED BY FIRE UPON IMPACT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD02FA052](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD02FA052), May 19, 2002: Ayres S-2R (N88MQ), Swanton, MD, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain visual separation from a set of known, yet unmarked power lines.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
