## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) MR. DRYBREAD HAD BEEN WORKING ON THE AVIONICS SYSTEM FOR N827CM ON MAY 22, 2002. THIS WORK REQUIRED THE REMOVAL OF THE CANARD WING TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE AVIONICS. ONCE THE WORK WAS DONE MR. DRYBREAD REINSTALLED THE CANARD. ON MAY 23, 2002, AT APPROXIMATELY 2005 UCT, MR. DRYBREAD DEPARTED THE ANDERSON AIRPORT FOR A LOCAL FLIGHT IN N827CM. DURING THE CLIMB OUT AT APPROXIMATELY TWO-STATUE MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE AIRPORT, THE CANARD WING SEPARATED FROM THE AIRCRAFT. MR. DRYBREAD LOST ALL PITCH CONTROL AND THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO A HIGH SPEED DESCENT. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED INTO A FARM FIELD AT APPROXIMATELY 240 KNOTS INDICATED ON THE AIRSPEED INDICATOR. THE PILOT WAS KILLED DURING THE IMPACT WITH THE GROUND AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE CANARD WING WAS FOUND APPROXIMATELY .6 STATUE MILES FROM THE MAIN CRASH SITE. MR. DRYBREAD HAD NOT KEPT HIS LOGBOOK UPDATED AND THE LAST ENTRY WAS JANUARY 2001. THE AIRCRAFT LOGBOOK AND RECORDS COULD NOT BE LOCATED. THE AIRCRAFT REGISTRATION AND AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATES WERE RECOVERED WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL LIMITATION DOCUMENTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02FA140](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02FA140), May 23, 2002: Schutte Ms. Ryan Special (N827CM), Anderson, IN, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to properly install the canard attach bolts prior to the flight and the resulting inflight separation of the canard.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
