## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 06/15/2002 WHILE PREPARING TO DEPART ON A PERSONAL FLIGHT, THE APPROPRIATELY RATED PILOT EXPERIENCED A WEAK BATTERY. THE AIRCRAFT WAS STARTED WITH EXTERNAL POWER AND IN THE PROCESS BACKFIRED ONCE. THE PIC DEPARTED AND AFTER A SHORT TIME SMELLED SMOKE FUMES IN THE CABIN. A SHORT TIME LATER A TOTAL ELECTRICAL FAILURE WAS EXPERIENCED. THE PIC CALLED ATC ON A HANDHELD RADIO AND RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT OF DEPARTURE AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. BOTH PILOT AND PASSENGER DEPLANED WITHOUT INJURY. THIS INCIDENT IS CLOSED WITH THIS REPORT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
