## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JUNE 20, 2002, AROUND 1620 (LCL) TWO AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED A MIDAIR COLLISION WHILE ON APPROACH AT THE ANTONIO RIVERA RODRIGUEZ AIRPORT, ISLA DE VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO (NON-TOWERED AIRPORT). THE AIRCRAFT INVOLVED WERE A CESSNA CARAVAN TAIL NUMBER N786DM, AND A BRITTEN-NORMAN ISLANDER TAIL NUMBER N663VL. THE AIRCRAFT WERE FLYING AT AN ALTITUDE OF 400' WHEN THE RIGHT WING OF THE CARAVAN HIT THE LEFT WING OF THE ISLANDER. NO INJURIES REPORTED. THE CARAVAN LOST APPROXIMATELY SIX FEET OF WING AND THE ISLANDER LOST THE WING TIP. BOTH PILOTS LANDED SAFELY. WEATHER CONDITIONS AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WERE VFR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB MIA02LA119](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/MIA02LA119), Jun 20, 2002: Britten-Norman BN-2B-26 (N663VL), Isla De Vieques, PR, substantial damage. Probable cause: the failure of both pilots to see and avoid, also causal was the failure of the pilot of the Britten-Norman Islander (N663VL) to yield right of way to an aircraft in the traffic pattern.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
