## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JUNE 30, 2002, AT APPROXIMATELY 1225 CDT, WALTZ RV-8, N877TC, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AS A RESULT OF AN EMERGENCY LANDING 4 MILES SOUTH OF PAPILLION, NEBRASKA. DURING DESCENT TO THE OMAHA MILLARD AIRPORT (MLE) THE PILOT NOTED A SLOW FLUCTUATION OF THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE. AT APPROXIMATELY 2300 FEET AGL, THE PIC EXPERIENCED A PROPELLER OVERSPEED AND AN ENGINE OIL PRESSURE OF 20 PSI. THE PIC THEN EXPERIENCED A COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND CONDUCTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED BY THE PIC OR SINGLE PASSENGER. SUBSEQUENT INVESTIGATION DISCLOSED THAT THE ENGINE OIL PUMP APPEARS TO HAVE CAVITATED DUE TO LOW OIL QUANTITY, INDUCING THE FAILURE OF THE #4 CYLINDER CONNECTING ROD BOLTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02LA179](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02LA179), Jun 30, 2002: Waltz RV-8 (N877TC), Omaha, NE, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to a loose connecting rod cap bolt and the resulting fatigue failure of the connecting rod cap. A related factor was the unsuitable terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
