## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT AND A FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR-RATED PASSENGER WERE DEPARTING SOD RUNWAY 18 FROM THE RUNWAY 4-22 INTERSECTION. THE AIRPLANE WAS PROPERLY CONFIGURED WITH 25 DEGREES OF FLAPS FOR THE 1,830 FEET OF RUNWAY REMAINING FROM THE INTERSECTION. APPROXIMATELY 2/3 DOWN THE RUNWAY, THE PILOT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE INSUFFICIENT DISTANCE REMAINING AND RETARDED THE THROTTLE TO REJECT THE TAKEOFF. FOLLOWING ENCOURAGEMENT FROM THE PASSENGER, THE PILOT REAPPLIED FULL THROTTLE TO CONTINUE. THE AIRCRAFT MOMENTARILY BECAME AIRBORNE BEFORE STRIKING TREES APPROXIMATELY 120 YARDS BEYOND THE DEPARTURE END OF THE RUNWAY. ACCORDING TO THE CHEROKEE 140 PILOT'S GUIDE, UNDER THE DENSITY ALTITUDE AND RUNWAY CONDITIONS PRESENT AND USING PROPER SHORT FIELD TECHNIQUE, THE TAKEOFF DISTANCE TO CLEAR A 50-FOOT OBSTACLE WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 2175 FEET. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^
