## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JULY 19, 2002 N9B A SONERAI, LTS SERIAL #1 PILOTED BY DAVID BILGRI CERTIFICATE #335406775 WAS DEPARTING DODGE COUNTY, JUNEAU, WI FOR A LOCAL FLIGHT. WHILE ON THE TAKE OFF ROLL THE AIRCRAFT CANOPY CAME OPEN. THE CANOPY WAS NOT PROPERLY CLOSED (ACCORDING TO THE PILOT). THE CANOPY EXTENDED TO THE FULL OPEN POSITION TO THE RIGHT. WHILE DOING SO IT CREATED AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF DRAG AND INTERRUPTION OF THE AIRFLOW, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO ENTER A STALLED CONDITION. THE PILOT APPLIED STALL RECOVERY PROCEDURES AT 200 FEET WHILE IN A RIGHT HAND TURN CROSS WIND OF RUNWAY 8. AFTER THE RECOVERY THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT HAVE ADEQUATE ALTITUDE TO CLEAR TERRAIN. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE TERRAIN SUFFERING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02CA203](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02CA203), Jul 19, 2002: Bilgri Sonerai II Lts (N9B), Juneau, WI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain sufficient airspeed while maneuvering to return to the airport. A reduction in handling quality and the distraction due to the open canopy were contributing factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
