## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT STATED HE WAS ON APPROACH TO DYERSVILLE AIRPORT. HE HAD LOWERED THE FLAPS TO 20 DEGREES. WHEN HE TURNED ON BASE, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AND QUIT. THE PILOT STATED THAT AT THIS TIME HE PUMPED THE THROTTLE AND THE ENGINE CAME BACK FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS. HE THEN BROUGHT THE FLAPS UP TO EXTEND HIS GLIDE, PULLED THE CARB. HEAT ON, AND SET UP TO LAND IN A SOYBEAN FIELD. ON DESCENT, THE PILOT OPENED THE DOOR TO PREVENT JAMMING ON IMPACT. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE WEST OF THE AIRPORT WITH A DIRECTION OF FLIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 230 DEGREES. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND, BREAKING THE NOSE GEAR, FLIPPED OVER ON ITS BACK, AND CAME TO REST APPROXIMATELY 36 FEET FROM THE INITIAL IMPACT POINT. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE THEN TURNED THE FUEL VALVE OFF AND EXITED THE AIRCRAFT (SEE ATTACHED SHEET). ^PRIVACY DATA OMITT^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02LA240](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02LA240), Aug 6, 2002: Cessna 150H (N6995S), Dyersville, IA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate in-flight planning/decision which resulted in fuel exhaustion and subsequent loss of engine power. A related factor was the bean field.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
