## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 10, 2002, DURING THE APPROACH TO LANDING AT TAMPA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT A FEDERAL EXPRESS AIRCRAFT N388FE EXPERIENCED A LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR PROBLEM WHEN THE GEAR WAS EXTENDED. THE UPPER SUPPORT FRAME ASSEMBLY (PN: ARB0642-1) WHICH IS THE TOP ATTACHMENT POINT FOR THE RETRACT CYLINDER BROKE WHICH LET THE LEFT MAIN GEAR SLAM DOWN TO THE EXTENDED POSITION. THE GEAR DOWN AND LOCK SWITCH WAS BROKEN DURING THIS FAILURE WHICH INDICATED THAT THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WAS UNSAFE. THE #3 HYDRAULIC SYSTEM DECREASED TO ZERO DUE TO LINES SHEARED. AFTER THE PILOT LANDED THE DC10 AIRCRAFT IT IS COMPANY PROCEDURE TO SHUT DOWN ALL THREE ENGINES FOR A GEAR FAILURE WHICH IN TURN DISABLED THE ANTI-SKID SYSTEM DUE TO LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER. ALL EIGHT BRAKES LOCKED UP ON LANDING WHICH BLEW ALL MAIN TIRES AND DAMAGED WHEEL RIMS.
