## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) APPROXIMATELY 0940 CDT, ON AUGUST 17, 2002, A BELLANCA BL-17-30A, N8851V, S/N 30372, DEPARTED BEATRICE, NEBRASKA, ON A VFR FLIGHT TO HASTINGS, NEBRASKA. THE AIRCRAFT LOST POWER APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT OVER OHIOWA, NEBRASKA. THE PILOT (SOLE OCCUPANT) ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE AFTER FIRST TURNING THE FUEL SELECTOR TO ANOTHER FUEL TANK. AFTER ONE ATTEMPT, HE THEN TURNED THE FUEL SELECTOR BACK TO THE SAME TANK (LEFT MAIN) AND MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A FIELD 1.5 MILES WEST OF THE TOWN OF OHIOWA. AFTER FAA PERSONNEL ARRIVED TO REVIEW THE ACCIDENT AND GO OVER THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE PIC IT WAS FOUND THE LEFT MAIN FUEL TANK WAS EMPTY, AND THERE WAS ALSO NO FUEL IN THE ENGINE FUEL STRAINER. NO FUEL COULD BE REMOVED FROM THE FUEL TANK SUMP OR COULD BE SEEN IN THE AIRCRAFT LEFT MAIN FUEL TANK. THE OTHER THREE FUEL TANKS ON BOARD THE AIRCRAFT WERE FILLED TO THE TOP OF THE FUEL CAPS WHEN INSPECTED AT THE SCENE. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02CA253](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02CA253), Aug 17, 2002: Bellanca BL-17-30A (N8851V), Ohiawa, NE, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot failed to verify the aircraft refueling and he did not follow emergency procedures for engine restart. Factors to the accident included fuel starvation and the fence post.

## Other reports on N8851V (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
