## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON AUGUST 18, WHILE ENROUTE FROM AN AIRSHOW THE APPROPRIATELY RATED AND CERTIFICATED PILOT IN COMMAND WAS AT ABOUT 2500 FEET MSL IN NORMAL CRUISE CONFIGURATION WHEN HE EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE #2 (RIGHT) ENGINE. THE FAILURE RESULTED IN THE PIC NOT BEING ABLE TO FEATHER THE PROPELLER AND ALSO CAUSED A SMALL OIL FED FIRE IN FLIGHT. THE PIC MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A CORNFIELD, AND CAME TO REST ON ITS BELLY AND RIGHT WING TIP. THE PILOT AND 2 PASSENGERS EXITED THE AIRCRAFT THROUGH THE EMERGENCY ESCAPE HATCH WITHOUT INJURY. THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED MAJOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE, WINGS, AND BOTH PROPELLERS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02LA254](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02LA254), Aug 18, 2002: Grumman C-1A (N189G), Roseville, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure and the resulting separation of the engine cylinder, which severed both electrical propeller control systems on the affected engine. A factor to the accident was the cornfield.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
