## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE LEFT ENGINE WAS INTENTIONALLY SHUT DOWN AND FEATHERED AT 4500 FEET MSL DURING A TRAINING FLIGHT. THE STUDENT ATTEMPTED AN UNSUCCESSFUL RE-START. THE INSTRUCTOR THEN TOOK COMMAND OF THE AIRCRAFT AND ATTEMPTED A RE-START. HE STATES THAT HE ESTABLISHED 1500-1800 RPM, AND THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE WAS IN THE GREEN. HOWEVER, HE DID NOT HAVE FUEL PRESSURE. ASSYMETRICAL RUDDER FORCES WERE PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE RE-START ATTEMPTS. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOADED WITH TWO PASSENGERS, THE INSTRUCTOR, THE STUDENT AND A FULL LOAD OF FUEL. WITH THE LEFT ENGINE ROTATING, THE AIRCRAFT COULD NOT MAINTAIN ALTITUDE. NO ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO FEATHER THE ENGINE AGAIN. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO RETURN TO FFC. WHEN APPROXIMATELY 2 MILES SHORT OF THE APPROACH TO RUNWAY 31, THE INSTRUCTOR REALIZED HE COULD NOT MAKE THE RUNWAY, AND ELECTED TO LAND IN A BRUSHY AREA. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE LEFT WING WAS SHEARED, THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WAS SHEARED, AND THE NOSE SECTION WAS DEMOLISHED. ALL FOUR OCCUPANTS DEPLANED WITHOUT INJURY. THERE WAS NO FIRE. BOTH PROPELLERS WERE UNFEATHERED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL02LA161](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL02LA161), Aug 24, 2002: Piper PA-34-200 (N55210), Peachtree City, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The certified flight instructors failure to feather the propeller in accordance with operating procedures that resulted in loss of altitude and the in-flight collision with terrain.
