## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT OF N42231 STATED HE WAS NUMBER ONE IN THE TRAFFIC PATTERN FOR THE RIO LINDA AIRPORT WHEN A BANNER TOW AIRCRAFT DROPPED HIS BANNER. THE PILOT HAD TO EXTEND HIS DOWNWIND, AND ON HIS BASE TO FINAL TURN HE LOST POWER. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED TREES AND CAME TO REST IN A DRY CREEK BED APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER MILE FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY. INSPECTION OF THE AIRPLANE FOUND FUEL EXHAUSTION DUE TO THE FAILURE OF A PATCH ON THE FUEL TANK.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX02LA263](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX02LA263), Aug 25, 2002: Pravecek Lawrence Varieze (N42231), Rio Linda, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the loss of engine power caused by fuel exhaustion due to a fuel tank leak. Also causal was the inadequate maintenance performed on the repair of the fuel tank by unknown maintenance personnel.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
