## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE STUDENT PILOT WAS COMPLETING A CROSS COUNTRY SOLO FLIGHT. AT APPROXIMATELY 12:10 EST THE STUDENT PILOT NOTED A CHANGE IN THE ENGINE NOISE LEVEL FOLLOWED BY A LOSS OF ENGINE RPM. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT LOST SPEED AND NOSED OVER THE ENGINE RECOVERED. THE STUDENT PILOT PULLED THE NOSE UP TO GAIN ALTITUDE WHEN THE ENGINE STOPPED COMPLETELY. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST IN A WOODED AREA APPROXIMATELY 100 YARDS FROM A NEARBY HOME. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK TREES AND CAME TO REST INVERTED. THE PILOT RECEIVED NO INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THE IMPACT. SHE WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT THROUGH THE BROKEN WINDSHIELD AND WALK TO THE NEARBY HOME FOR ASSISTANCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC02LA176](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC02LA176), Aug 27, 2002: Piper PA-38-112 (N4307E), Athens, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's improper fuel management, which resulted in fuel starvation during cruise flight. A factor was the operator's failure to perform maintenance on a fuel gauge that was noted twice…
