## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT WAS LANDING AT A REMOTE OFF AIRPORT SITE WITH HIS PIPER PA-18. IN HIS ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE LANDING, HE TURNED FINAL APPROACH AND REALIZED HIS APPROACH WAS TOO HIGH AND TOO CLOSE, BUT CONTINUED ANYWAY. THIS CONTRIBUTED TO HIS EXCESS AIRSPEED WHICH CAUSED HIM TO TOUCHDOWN ABOUT HALF-WAY DOWN THE AVAILABLE LANDING AREA WITH A HIGHER THAN DESIRED GROUNDSPEED. TEH SITE WAS DAMP DUE TO FOG EARLIER IN THE DAY. HE ELECTED TO CONTINUE THE LANDING AND STOP INSTEAD OF EXECUTING A GO-AROUND. THE AIRCRAFT WENT OFF THE END OF THE AIRSTRIP AND INTO THE TUNDRA, WITH THE LEFT WHEEL FALLING INTO A LARGE HOLE. THE LEFT GEAR WAS TORN OFF AND THE LEFT WING STRUCK THE GROUND AS WELL AS THE PROPELLER. SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE LEFT WING AND LIFT STRUT, LEFT GEAR AND PROPELLER. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO BOTH OCCUPANTS.
