## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT WAS IN FLIGHT WHEN THE ENGINE OIL TEMPERATURE STARTED TO GET HOT. THE PILOT TURNED BACK TOWARD THE AIRPORT. ON THE WAY BACK TO THE AIRPORT THE PILOT DECIDED TO OPEN THE COWL FLAPS TO SEE IF THE OIL TEMPERATURE WOULD COME DOWN, BUT BY MISTAKE HE PULLED THE FUEL SHUTOFF INSTEAD. THE ENGINE THEN LOST POWER AND THE PILOT COULD NOT DETERMINE WHY. HE DECIDED TO PICK A FIELD TO LAND IN BUT APPROACHED IT AT TOO HIGH OF A RATE. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN AT THE END OF THE FIELD COLLAPSED THE NOSE GEAR AND STRUCK SOME POWER LINES. THE AIRCRAFT ENDED UP INVERTED ON A ROAD NEXT TO THE FIELD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC02LA185](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC02LA185), Sep 7, 2002: Reiley Seawind 3000 (N278ER), Bloomingburg, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadvertent use of the fuel shutoff valve which resulted in a subsequent total loss of engine power due to fuel starvation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
