## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AFTER THE ACCIDENT, THE PILOT CALLED THE WASHINGTON AIRPORT MANAGER AND REPORTED THAT HIS ENGINE HAD LOST OIL PRESSURE AND THE ENGINE SEIZED. ATTEMPTING AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING IN A CORNFIELD, THE AIRCRAFT REPORTEDLY STALLED 30 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND. THE AIRPORT MANAGER OBTAINED AN AIRCRAFT TO TAKE AERIAL PHOTOS OF THE SITE AND REPORTED THAT THERE WAS A TRAIL OF OIL LEADING DOWN THE TAXI WAY TO THE RUNWAY THAT THE PREVIOUS PILOT HAD TAKEN OFF FROM. INSPECTION DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE WAS NOT SEIZED, BUT WAS NOT RUNNING WHEN IT HIT THE GROUND. A MAGNETO HAD SPARK, THERE WERE FOUR QUARTS OF OIL IN THE CRANK CASE, THERE WAS AN ADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY, THE ENGINE HAD COMPRESSION AND THE MAGNETOS WERE TURNED TO THE "ON" POSITION. AN OIL LINE TO THE OIL PRESSURE GAGE WAS DISCONNECTED AT THE ENGINE. SEE ATTACHMENT "A". ^PRIVACY DATA OMI^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02LA286](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02LA286), Sep 16, 2002: Bailey DSA-1 (N304MB), Washington, IA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The selection of unsuitable terrain and the failure of the oil pressure gage line. Factors were, the pilot/owners failure to obtain an annual condition inspection, and the corn crop.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
