## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED RUNWAY 18 AT ANKENY, IOWA, AT APPROXIMATELY 1320 LOCAL TIME. THERE WERE TWO PASSENGERS ONBOARD THE AIRCRAFT. WITNESSES STATED THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN A LEFT TURN AT APPROXIMATELY 150 TO 300 FEET IN THE AIR AND CONTINUED TO TURN UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND. SHORTLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED THE AIRCRAFT WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES, RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF THE PILOT. WITNESS STATEMENTS INDICATED THE ENGINE NOISE CHANGED AFTER LIFTOFF, HOWEVER THE WITNESS STATED THE ENGINE APPEARED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY AT THE TIME THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI02FA292](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI02FA292), Sep 24, 2002: Piper PA-24-260 (N8782P), Ankeny, IA, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot applied an excessive angle of bank and failed to maintain terrain clearance. An additonal factor was the pilot's attention being diverted.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
