## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) HELICOPTER WAS IN CRUISE FLIGHT @ 700 AGL. CRITICAL BEARING TEMP STARTED TO RISE, PILOT STARTED LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LAND. WITHIN A MINUTE THE BEARING TEMP INCREASED RAPIDLY AND ENGINE SURGED. PILOT IMMEDIATELY EXECUTED AN AUTO ROTATION TO AN OPEN FIELD ABOUT 1 MILE SOUTHEAST OF RICHMOND, MIAIRPORT. FLARE WAS FAST DUE TO TREES LIMITING GLIDE PATH. HELICOPTER TIPPED FORWARD ON TO THE NOSE AND ROLLED LEFT ON TO IT'S SIDE. PILOT WALKED OUT UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA006](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA006), Oct 7, 2002: Wolf Rotorway Exec-162F (N1955Z), Gregory, MI, substantial damage. Probable cause: Failure of the secondary drive shaft, which resulted in a complete loss of power to the main rotor, and a high forward airspeed on touchdown, causing the helicopter to flip forward.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
