## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) A DHC-8 AIRCRAFT WAS ENROUTE FROM DCA TO ALB. 10 MILES WEST OF ALB AT 0015Z DESCENDING THROUGH 4,000FT MSL A FLOCK OF 10-15 GEESE WERE ENCOUNTERED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS PROCEEDING EASTBOUND, THE GEESE WERE FLYING WESTBOUND, AT LEAST 2 GEESE IMPACTED THE AIRCRAFT. A FLIGHT CONTROL CHECK WAS CONDUCTED BY THE CREW WITH NO PROBLEMS FOUND. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO ALB AND MADE A NORMAL LANDING AND TAXIED TO THE RAMP. THE AIRCRAFT WAS BEING DEPLANED WHEN A FUEL LEAK WAS OBSERVED BY THE CAPT. DURING HIS POSTFLIGHT INSPECTION. FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE LEADING EDGE AND NACELLE AREA. THE APU WAS THEN SHUTDOWN AND ACFR WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE. ACFR INSPECTED AND OPENED THE COWLING AND INSPECTED FOR FIRE. NO FIRE WAS FOUND. HAZMAT RESPONDED TO THE FUEL LEAK AND INITIATED CLEANUP. FURTHER INSPECTION BY MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL REVEALED THAT THE FORWARD WING SPARE HAD BEEN PENETRATED BY A GOOSE AND DAMAGED THE FUEL TANK. ADDITIONAL DAMAGE WAS FOUND IN THE VERTICAL STABILIZER AS A GOOSE HAD PENETRATED THE STABILIZER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC03LA004](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC03LA004), Oct 15, 2002: de Havilland DHC-8-102 (N847EX), Albany, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: An in-flight collision with birds. A factor was the night conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
