## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT STATED THAT AFTER A 15-MINUTE FLIGHT THE ENGINE ABRUPTLY QUIT, WITH NO WARNING INDICATION. AIRCRAFT WAS APPROXIMATELY AT 12,000 FEET AND CLIMBING TO 12, 500 FEET. PILOT LINED UP ON A DIRT ROAD AND ATTEMPTED TO LAND. AIRCRAFT HIT SEVERAL ROCKS DURING THE ROLL OUT; ONE OF WHICH RUPTURED THE RIGHT WING FUEL TANK. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST ON THE ROAD. THE RECOVERY CREW DISCOVERED THE FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE 1/2 WAY BETWEEN ON AND OFF POSITION. (-23 AMENDMENT) THERE IS NO AIRWORTHINESS PROBLEM WITH THE POSITION OF THE FUEL SHUT OFF VALVE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB DEN03LA006](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/DEN03LA006), Oct 14, 2002: Mooney M20B (N74530), Loa, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: the pilot's inadvertent placement of the fuel selector position in the off position. A contributing factor was the pilot's lack of familiarity with the aircraft.

## Other reports on N74530 (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
