## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 11/01/2002 ABOUT 1300 AST, A WHEEL EQUIPPED KOLB FIRE STAR, N8199, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE DURING TAKEOFF AT BIRCHWOOD AIRPORT, BIRCHWOOD, AK. THE AMATEUR/HOMEBUILT WAS BEING OPERATED AS A VISUAL FLIGHT RULES (VFR), LOCAL AREA, PERSONAL FLIGHT WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. DURING INSPECTION OF THE FUEL SYSTEM IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE FUEL WAS CONTAMINATED WITH CORROSION IN THE FLOAT BOWLS AND IN THE MAIN JETS OF THE CARBURETORS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC03LA009](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC03LA009), Nov 1, 2002: Arima Kolb Fire Star II (N8199), Chugiak, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight inspection which failed to remove contaminated fuel from the airplane's fuel system, resulting in a loss of engine power during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
