## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.19) ON NOVEMBER 6, 2002, APPROXIMATELY 1200 CENTRAL STANDARD TIME, A PIPER PA-31-35 TWIN-ENGINE AIRPLANE, N698VW, WAS SUBSTANIALLY DAMAGED FOLLOWING AN IN-FLIGHT ENGINE FIRE WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT NEAR NEAR KERRVILLE, TEXAS. THE AIRPLANE WAS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE PRIVATE PILOT UNDER TITLE14 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS PART 91. THE PRIVATE PILOT, SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRPLANE, WAS NOT INJURED. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED FOR THE CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, AND A FLIGHT PLAN WAS NOT FILED. THE PERSONAL FLIGHT DEPARTED CASTROVILLE, TEXAS, APPROXIMATELY 1130. THE PILOT REPORTED TO THE FAA INSPECTOR, WHO RESPONDED TO THE ACCIDENT SITE, THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES FROM THE KERRVILLE MUNICIPAL/LOUIS SCHREINER FIELD AIRPORT WHEN THE RIGHT ENGINE LOST POWER AND THE EGT DECREASED. THE PILOT PERFORMED THE EMERGENCY PROCEDURE AND FEATHERED THE PROPELLER ON THE RIGHT ENGINE. THE PILOT LANDED THE AIRPLANE AT KERRVILLE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. DURING AN EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE BY THE PILOT, A MECHANIC, AND THE FAA INSPECTOR, OIL WAS FOUND FROM THE RIGHT ENGINE PROPELLER AFT TO THE RIGHT VERTICAL STABILIZER. THE OUTBOARD PORTION OF THE RIGHT FLAP, THE RIGHT GEAR DOOR, AND THE RIGHT WING LOCKER WERE DESTROYED BY THE IN-FLIGHT FIRE. THERE WAS THERMAL DEFORMATION OF THE AFT RIGHT WING SPAR. (-23) ENGINE OIL LEAKED FROM THE CRANKSHAFT FRONT OIL SEAL. THE OIL WAS IGNITED BY THE TURBO CHARGER OR EXHAUST GAS. THE RESULTANT FIRE BURNED THE WING LOCKER, LOWER SKIN, LANDING GEAR DOOR AND WING FLAP. PILOT HEARD A LOUD BANG AND NOTICED AN ENGINE FUEL FLOW DISCREPANCY. PILOT SHUT DOWN AND FEATHERED RIGHT ENGINE. AIRCRAFT WAS LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW03LA046](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW03LA046), Nov 6, 2002: Piper PA-31-350 (N698VW), Kerrville, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The propeller shaft seal leak resulting in an in-flight fire.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
