## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ACCIDENT OCCURRED DURING PRIVATE PILOT CHECK RIDE. PILOT EXAMINER WAS CHECKING THE ENGINE OUT DESCENT AND EMERGENCY LANDING MANEUVERS. AT AN ALTITUDE VERY NEAR THE GROUND, THE PILOT EXAMINER ADDED MAXIMUM POWER AND CALLED FOR THE STUDENT TO GO AROUND. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUND WITH A BOUNCE THEN STRUCK HARD ONTO THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE ENGINE WAS RIPPED OUT OF THE MOUNTS AND TORN AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT. THE NOSE GEAR WAS TORN AWAY AND THE RIGHT MAIN MOUNT WAS PUSHED UP THROUGH THE WING AND THEN TORN OFF. THE AIRCRAFT SLID TO A STOP ON THE LEFT MAIN GEAR AND THE RIGHT WING. DAMAGE TO THE TAIL OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS EXTENSIVE. NOTE OF INTEREST: FOUR DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT DATE, WHILE TRYING TO RECOVER THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE FIELD WHERE IT CRASHED, THE SALVAGE CREW IGNITED A FUEL TANK AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS TOTALLY DESTROYED BY FIRE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA03LA009](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA03LA009), Nov 14, 2002: Piper PA-28-201T (N2208Y), La Grande, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: Inadequate supervision and the premature raising of flaps before a positive climb was established.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
