## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR/PILOT-IN-COMMAND WAS CONDUCTING A COMPLEX AIRPLANE CHECKOUT FOR THE PRIVATE PILOT, WHO WAS SITTING IN THE LEFT FRONT SEAT OF THE AIRPLANE. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ASKED THE PRIVATE PILOT (WHO WAS MANIPULATING THE AIRPLANE'S CONTROLS) TO PERFORM A SHORT FIELD LANDING. AFTER TOUCHING DOWN ON THE MAIN LANDING GEAR AND THEN LOWERING THE NOSE GEAR TO THE RUNWAY, THE PRIVATE PILOT PLACED THE LANDING GEAR LEVER IN THE UP POSITION INSTEAD OF PLACING THE FLAP LEVER IN THE UP POSITION. ALTHOUGH THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CAUGHT THIS ERROR AND EXPEDITIOUSLY SLAPPED THE LANDING GEAR LEVER BACK TO THE DOWN POSITION, HE WAS NOT QUICK ENOUGH TO REVERSE THE OUTCOME. THE NOSE LANDING GEAR UNLOCKED AND BEGAN A SLOW RETRACTION. THE RESULT WAS MINOR DAMAGE TO GEAR DOORS AND REARWARD BENDING OF THE PROPELLER BLADES. MAIN GEAR DID NOT UNLOCK.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
