## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED LAKE RIDGE AIRPORT FOR FLIGHT INSTRUCTION. APPROXIMATELY 4-5 MINUTES AFTER DEPARTURE A NOTICEABLE TREMOR WAS FELT IN THE AIRCRAFT. AN IMMEDIATE TURN WAS STARTED TO RETURN TO LAKE RIDGE AIRPORT. ENGINE RPM DROPPED APPROXIMATELY 500 RPM AND CARB HEAT WAS ACTIVATED TO SEE IF THAT WOULD HELP. ENGINE OIL PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE WAS GOOD. THE LOSS OF ENGINE RPM REMAINED CONSTANT. WITH THE LOSS OF ENGINE RPM (THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN) THE PILOT COULD NOT MAINTAIN ALTITUDE AND THE DECISION WAS MADE TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT IN A FIELD OFF THE AIRPORT. THE PILOT AND STUDENT WERE NOT INJURED IN THE LANDING AND THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED NO DAMAGE IN THE LANDING.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
