## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) PILOT HAD TO DE-ICE THE AIRCRAFT BEFORE FLIGHT. I ASKED HIM HOW IT WAS DONE AND SAID HE USED ALCOHOL, FUEL SUMPS WERE DRAINED AND NO WATER BUT DID GET FUEL. HE HAND PROPPED THE ENGINE BEFORE STARTING AND STARTED THE ENGINE, PERFORMED THE REQUIRED CHECKS, ALL WERE NORMAL. RECEIVED TOWER CLEARANCE FOR RUNWAY 23. ABOUT 800 TO 1000 FEET ALTITUDE LOST ENGINE POWER. PILOT MADE A RIGHT TURN BACK TO THE AIRPORT AND MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON TAXIWAY DELTA HITTING HARD AND SKIDDING OVER 100 FEET SHEARING THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR AND GEAR DOOR OFF CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB IAD03LA025](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/IAD03LA025), Jan 5, 2003: Mooney 20J (N1074Z), Morristown, NJ, substantial damage. Probable cause: Ice in the fuel system, which resulted in restricted fuel flow and a subsequent loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
