## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) WHEN ON THE DOWNWIND LEG TO LAND AT MANSFIELD, MO AIRPORT (O3B), THE PILOT REDUCED POWER TO LAND. ON THE BASE LEG SHE DETERMINED THAT THE WIND HAD POSITIONED HER WIDE SO SHE ATTEMPTED TO ADD POWER TO ADJUST THE RATE OF DESCENT. THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND, AND AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO REGAIN POWER, SHE DECIDED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON A LANE ALIGNED WITH HER FLIGHT PATH. DURING THE LANDING, THE LEFT WING CLIPPED A SAPLING AND TURNED THE AIRCRAFT 180 DEGREES, CAUSING IT TO SLIDE SIDEWAYS UNTIL COMING TO A STOP. THE PILOT THEN EXITED THE AIRCRAFT WITH NO REPORTED INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA051](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA051), Jan 13, 2003: Piper PA-38-112 (N2400K), Mansfield, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to use carburetor heat, which resulted in the formation of carburetor ice and the loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
