## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON JANUARY 20, 2003, ABOUT 0945 EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST), A CESSNA 207, N9945M, WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DURING A FORCED LANDING, FOLLOWING A TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WHILE DEPARTING FROM PUT IN BAY AIRPORT (3W2) ENROUTE TO CARL R. KELLER FIELD (PCW) PORT CLINTON, OH, WITH TWO PASSENGERS. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE TOOK OFF ON RUNWAY 03 AT 3W2. ABOUT 300 FEET AGL, THE ENGINE LOST ALL POWER, AND HE PERFORMED A FORCED LANDING INTO TREES ON LANGRAM RD., NORTH OF THE AIRPORT. HE ALSO STATED THAT BOTH FUEL GAGES READ "1/4" FULL, BUT WAS NOT CERTAIN WHICH TANK (LEFT OR RIGHT) WAS SELECTED FOR USE ON TAKE-OFF. ONCE THE POWER LOSS WAS OBSERVED, THE PILOT STATED HE SWITCHED TANKS SEVERAL TIMES AND ACTIVATED THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP, BUT NO INDICATION OF FUEL FLOW WAS OBSERVED ON THE FUEL FLOW GAGE. HE HAD PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED EVENTS OF THIS TYPE, AND DID NOTE THAT THERE WAS A LAG BETWEEN ACTIVATION OF THE PUMP, AND A NOTICEABLE INCREASE IN FUEL FLOW, AND HE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND SUSTAIN FLIGHT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB NYC03LA040](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/NYC03LA040), Jan 20, 2003: Cessna 207A (N9945M), Put In Bay, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate fuel management, which resulted in fuel starvation and a total loss of engine power during the initial climb.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
