## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO START THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE INTENDED PURPOSE OF TAXIING FOR FUEL. HE REMOVED THE AIRCRAFT FROM HANGAR E-3 AND POSITIONED IT NEXT TO THE TAXIWAY. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE AIRCRAFT THE PILOT COULD HEAR THE STARTER TURN BUT NOT THE ENGINE OR THE PROPELLER. HE ATTEMPTED TO START THE AIRCRAFT TWICE WITH NO LUCK. HE THEN PLACED ALL SWITCHES INCLUDING THE KEY TO OFF, BUT LEFT THE THROTTLE APPROXIMATELY 1/3 OPEN. HE EXITED THE AIRCRAFT LEAVING HIS PASSENGER INSIDE. THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO MANIPULATE THE PROPELLER, AS HE HAD IN THE PAST, TO FREE WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS A FROZEN STARTER BELT. DURING THE PILOTS SECOND TURN OF THE PROPELLER THE ENGINE STARTED AND THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO MOVE. THE AIRCRAFT TAXIED APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET UNTIL IT STRUCK HANGAR D-12 LOCATED DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM HANGAR E-3. THE PASSENGER HAD NEVER BEEN IN A SMALL AIRCRAFT AND WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH ITS OPERATION. THE PASSENGER DID GRAB THE YOKE AND TRY TO STEER THE AIRCRAFT BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN PREVENTING IT FROM STRIKING THE HANGAR. THE PROPELLER CUT THROUGH THE D-12 HANGAR DOOR AND STRUCK THE RIGHT FLOAT OF AN AERONCA AR-15-AC THAT WAS STORED ON WOODEN BLOCKS INSIDE THE HANGAR. SEE CONTIUATION SHEET.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
