## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.19) ON FEBRUARY 1, 2003, AT 1046 MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME, A BEECH S-35, N6106V, COLLIDED WITH A CAR CROSSING THE RUNWAY AT DESERT GARDENS AIRSTRIP, QUARTZSITE, ARIZONA. THE PILOT/OWNER WAS OPERATING THE AIRPLANE UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF 14 CFR PART 91. THE PRIVATE PILOT AND ONE PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED; THE AIRPLANE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE PERSONAL CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT DEPARTED MCCLELLAND/PALOMAR (CRQ), CALIFORNIA, ABOUT 0900, EN ROUTE TO QUARTZSITE. DAY VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND AN INSTRUMENT FLIGHT RULES (IFR) FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED TO NEARBY BLYTHE, CALIFORNIA. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE FLEW FROM MONTGOMERY FIELD (MGY), SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, TO PALOMAR, AND THEN FILED IFR TO BLYTHE. HE WAS LANDING AT DESERT GARDENS AIRPORT (A DIRT STRIP). A ROAD CROSSES THE RUNWAY, AND A CAR PULLED OUT TO CROSS THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT TOUCHED DOWN AND SAW THE CAR. HE TRIED TO GO AROUND, BUT THE LEFT MAIN GEAR HIT THE CAR AND SHEARED OFF. THE AIRPLANE SKIDDED DOWN THE RUNWAY AND VEERED OFF TO THE LEFT, WHICH RESULTED IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE WING AND FUSELAGE. (-23) IMMEDIATELY AFTER AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN, A VEHICLE BEGAN TO CROSS THE RUNWAY ON AN ESTABLISHED DRIVE WAY/ROAD THAT TRAVERSED THE RUNWAY AND WAS PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY VEGETATION. PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LIFT BACK OFF AND OVER FLY THE VEHICLE. AS AIRCRAFT PASSED OVER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE THE AIRCRAFT'S LEFT MAINGEAR STRUCK THE RIGHT FRONT CORNER OF THE CAR. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SPUN PARTIALLY TO THE LEFT AS THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WAS BROKEN OFF THE PLANE. COLLISION RESULTED IN DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE, ENTIRE LEFT WING OF AIRCRAFT, ENTIRE LEFT SIDE OF FUSELAGE, AND LEFT REAR WING ATTACHMENT CASTING. NO INJURIES TO PILOT OR PASSENGER. OCCUPANT OF VEHICLE RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX03LA080](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX03LA080), Feb 1, 2003: Beech S-35 (N6106V), Quartzsite, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The driver of the vehicle did not stop prior to crossing the airstrip as directed by airstrip signage.
