## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON FEBRUARY 9, 2003, AT APPROXIMATELY 1130 CST, THE PILOT IN COMMAND OF A RANS, S-9, EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT, N34AP, DEPARTED FROM AN UNIMPROVED AIRFIELD NEAR GORDON, ALABAMA. AFTER TAKEOFF THE PILOT REPORTED INITIATING A SERIES OF STEEP TURNS (45 DEGREES) AT LOW AIRSPEED (60 MPH) AND LOW ALTITUDE (100' AGL) TO AVOID SOME ULTRA LIGHT AIRCRAFT OPERATING IN THE VICINITY. THE STEEP TURNS RESULTED IN AN ACCELERATED STALL WITH INSUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO RECOVER AND THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ATL03LA043](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ATL03LA043), Feb 9, 2003: Penska Rans S-9 (N34AP), Dothan, AL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain adequate airspeed which resulted in a stall and subsequent inflight collision with the ground

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
