## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.19) ON FEBRUARY 13, 2003, ABOUT 1015 PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, AN EXPERIMENTAL KESTERSON NIEUPORT 11 AIRPLANE, N110DK, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE FOLLOWING AN ABORTED TAKEOFF AND SUBSEQUENT NOSE OVER AT THE INDEPENDENCE STATE AIRPORT, INDEPENDENCE, OREGON. THE COMMERCIAL PILOT, THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRPLANE, WAS NOT INJURED. THE AIRPLANE IS OWNED BY THE PILOT, AND WAS BEING OPERATED AS A PERSONAL FLIGHT UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF TITLE 14, CFR PART 91, WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AND NO FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED FOR THE LOCAL FLIGHT. ACCORDING TO THE PILOT, THE AIRPLANE YAWED TO THE RIGHT IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKEOFF. HE STATED THAT THE AIRPLANE SETTLED BACK ONTO THE RUNWAY, TOUCHING DOWN RIGHT OF RUNWAY CENTERLINE. THE AIRPLANE TRACKED TO THE RIGHT AND EXITED THE RUNWAY SURFACE. AFTER EXITING THE RUNWAY, THE AIRPLANE ENCOUNTERED SOFT MUDDY TERRAIN AND NOSED OVER RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING ASSEMBLY AND RUDDER. (-23) DURING TAKEOFF, THE PILOT EXPERIENCED EXCESSIVE ENGINE TORQUE AND THE AIRCRAFT STARTED TO VEER TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT TRIED TO RECOVER USING RU DDER CONTROL INPUT WITH NO AVAIL. HE DECIDED TO LET THE AIRCRAFT DOWN WHEN THE LEFT WHEEL SUNK INTO THE GROUND AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND FLIPPED OVER AND LANDED UPSIDE DOWN. THERE WERE NO INJURIES TO THE SOLE OCCUPANT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB SEA03LA039](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/SEA03LA039), Feb 13, 2003: Kesterson Nieuport 11 (N110DK), Independence, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: Aircraft control not maintained during takeoff. Factors include soft/muddy terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
