## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ACCORDING TO THE PILOT WHILE AT CRUISE FLIGHT AT 6000 FEET THE ENGINE POWER DECREASED AS IF THE THROTTLE HAD BEEN PULLED TO IDLE. THE PILOT CHECKED THE QUANTITY OF FUEL IN THE TANKS AND FUEL WAS PRESENT. THE PILOT FELT THAT THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING BUT WOULD NOT DEVELOP POWER. REPEATED EFFORTS TO RESTORE FULL POWER FAILED. THE PILOT RADIOED MEMPHIS APPROACH CONTROL AND REPORTED AN IN-FLIGHT EMERGENCY DUE TO AN ENGINE FAILURE. APPROACH CONTROL VECTORED THE PILOT TO WILLIAM L. WHITEHURST FIELD, BOLIVAR, TN. THE AIRPLANE LEFT WING COLLIDED WITH TREES IN A HEAVILY WOODED AREA, SPUN TO THE RIGHT NOSE DOWN AND BACKED NOSE DOWN INTO A GROUP OF TREES WHICH CUSHIONED THE CRASH. BOTH THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WALKED AWAY WITH MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES. THERE WAS A POST CRASH FIRE. AIRPLANE WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED BY FIRE. EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE BY TELEDYNE CONTINENTAL MOTORS, INC. ON OCTOBER 29, 2003 WITH FAA AND NTSB PRESENT REVEALED NO ABNORMALITIES. THE ENGINE HAD 140.9 HOURS SINCE NEW WHEN THE 100 HOUR INSPECTION WAS COMPLETED ON 10-17-02.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
