## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) AIRCRAFT HAD LANDED IN A SHORT FIELD (800-1000FT) OVER A STAND OF APPROXIMATELY 20 FOOT TALL PINE TREES. THE ATTEMPTED DEPARTURE WAS OVER THE SAME TREES FROM A GRASS STRIP WHICH WAS SNOW COVERED AND UPHILL. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE TREES AND CRASHED INTO ANOTHER GROVE OF PINES CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT. THE PILOT WAS UNINJURED. NOTE: WHILE THIS ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON 02/28/03 AND WAS REPORTED TO THE NTSB ON THAT DATE, IT WAS NOT REPORTED TO THE FAA UNTIL 4/22/03.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CHI03LA112](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CHI03LA112), Feb 28, 2003: Aeronca 7AC (N84868), Grand Rapids, MN, destroyed. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to obtain adequate airspeed which resulted in a stall. The short, soft, takeoff area, and the trees were contributing factors.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
