## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) INSTRUCTOR BRIEFED HIS STUDENT ON TURNING THE CARBURETOR HEAT OFF AFTER LANDING AS PART OF THE TOUCH AND GO PROCEDURE. THE INSTRUCTOR SIMULATED A POWERPLANT FAILURE AND LANDED THE AIRCRAFT. THE STUDENT APPLIED FULL POWER BUT FAILED TO TURN OFF THE CARBURETOR HEAT. THE INSTRUCTOR REALIZED THAT THE AIRPLANE WAS NOT PRODUCING SUFFICIENT POWER AND TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND ABORTED THE TAKEOFF. INSUFFICIENT RUNWAY REMAINED TO STOP THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT WENT OFF THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND THE INSTRUCTOR MANEUVERED THE AIRCRAFT TO AVOID STRIKING A TREE HEAD-ON. THE WING STRUCK THE TREE CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. NOTE: THE CARBURETOR HEAT CONTROL IS NOT VISIBLE FROM THE REAR SEAT (INSTRUCTOR'S SEAT). POST INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT YIELDED NO MECHANICAL IRREGULARITIES. (.19) ON MARCH 1, 2003, ABOUT 1100 MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME, A PIPER PA-18-150, N62712, COLLIDED WITH OBSTACLES DURING AN ABORTED TAKEOFF FROM A PRIVATE DIRT STRIP NEAR CHANDLER, ARIZONA. THE AIRPLANE WAS OPERATED BY CHANDLER AIR SERVICE UNDER 14 CFR PART 91. THE CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR (CFI) AND STUDENT PILOT WERE NOT INJURED. THE AIRPLANE WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED. VIS UAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND NO FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED. THE INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT DEPARTED CHANDLER ABOUT 1030. THE CFI STATED THAT WHILE EXECUTING A TOUCH-AND-GO, THE AIRPLANE DIDN'T FEEL LIKE IT WAS GETTING FULL POWER AND HE ELECTED TO ABORT THE TAKEOFF. THE AIRPLANE OVERRAN THE RUNWAY AND INTO DESERT TERRAIN, COLLIDING WITH SOME LARGE BUSHES. PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION OF THE AIRPLANE BY FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION INSPECTORS REVEALED NO DISCREPANCIES WITH THE AIRFRAME OR THE ENGINE.
