## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON MARCH 8, 2003, N670JW, AN AMATEUR BUILT AIRCRAFT MODEL KOLB FIRESTAR, MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN AN OPEN FIELD APPROXIMATELY 6 MILES WEST OF BROWN AIRFIELD AIRPORT (SAN) SAN DIEGO CA. THE EMERGENCY LANDING WAS PRECIPITATED BY LOSS OF ENGINE POWER DURING CRUISE FLIGHT. DURING THE LANDING ROLL OUT THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE WHEN IT NOSED OVER, COMING TO REST INVERTED. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. THE PILOT STATED THAT HE HEARD A BANG FOLLOWED BY VIBRATION AND A REDUCTION IN ENGINE POWER. INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT ONE PROPELLER BLADE HAD SPLIT SPAN WISE (TIP TO ROOT). NTSB HAS SENT PROPELLER TO OEM POWERFIN INC. ARLINGTON WA VIA SEATTLE FSDO NM01. ATTN: TERESA BUTLER-STODDARD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX03LA110](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX03LA110), Mar 8, 2003: Kolb Firestar (N670JW), San Diego, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: propeller delamination due to the pilot's failure to properly secure the rear seat shoulder harness prior to flight. A contributing factor was the soft ground in which the airplane landed.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
