## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) ON 3/9/03 AT APPROXIMATELY 15:30 THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED MCKINNEY FOR A TRAINING FLIGHT. THE STUDENT PILOT HAD CHECKED THE FUEL WITH A STICK AND DETERMINED THAT 1:15 OF FUEL WAS AVAILABLE (7 GALLONS). 15 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT THE ENGINE STOPPED. THE AIRCRAFT WAS LANDED IN THE ONLY AVAILABLE FIELD, THE NOSE WHEEL AND R/H MAIN GEAR COLLAPSED CAUSING THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT TO IMPACT THE GROUND. DURING RECOVERY IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE AMOUNT OF FUEL WAS LESS THAN 2 GALLONS. UNUSABLE FUEL FOR THIS AIRCRAFT IS 3.2 GALLONS. (-23 AMENDMENT) THE PILOT IN COMMAND, MR. STEWART JOHN COLE, WAS COUNSELED ON THE NECESSITY TO PERSONALLY ENSURE FUEL QUANTITY. HE STATED IN THE FUTURE HE WOULD VERIFY FUEL QUANTITY AFTER STUDENT PILOT HAS CHECKED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB FTW03LA107](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/FTW03LA107), Mar 9, 2003: Cessna 150K (N6066G), Sherman, TX, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's failure to refuel the airplane which resulted in fuel exhaustion. A contributing factor was the lack of suitable terrain for the forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
