## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(.19) ON MARCH 10, 2003, AT 1606 PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, A BEECH 3NM, N14437, COLLIDED WITH TERRAIN DURING THE APPROACH TO LANDING AT LAKE RIVERSIDE AIRPORT NEAR ANZA, CALIFORNIA. THE OWNER WAS OPERATING THE AIRPLANE UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF 14 CFR PART 91. THE PRIVATE PILOT AND TWO PASSENGERS SUSTAINED FATAL INJURIES; THE AIRPLANE WAS DESTROYED. THE PERSONAL CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT DEPARTED RUBIDOUX (FLABOB) AIRPORT, RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA, AT AN UNDETERMINED TIME EN ROUTE TO LAKE RIVERSIDE. DAY VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND NO FLIGHT PLAN HAD BEEN FILED. THE PRIMARY WRECKAGE WAS AT 33 DEGREES 31.016 MINUTES NORTH LATITUDE AND 116 DEGREES 46.887 MINUTES WEST LONGITUDE. A WITNESS NEAR THE AIRPORT REPORTED THAT THE AIRPLANE FLEW PARALLEL TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF RUNWAY 29. THE AIRPLANE TURNED CROSSWIND AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY AND THE LANDING GEAR CAME DOWN. THE AIRPLANE FLEW DOWNWIND AND TURNED BASE. THE WITNESS SAID THE ENGINE SOUNDS DID NOT CHANGE AND THE AIRPLANE APPEARED STABLE THROUGHOUT THESE MANEUVERS. THE WITNESS SAID THAT THE AIRPLANE STARTED THE TURN TO FINAL. THE WITNESS SAID THAT AS THE TURN CONTINUED, THE AIRPLANE APPEARED TO BE PAST THE EXTENDED CENTERLINE OF THE RUNWAY. HE SAID THE AIRPLANE ABRUPTLY INCREASED THE LEFT TURN SO THAT THE BANK ANGLE APPROACHED 90 DEGREES AND THE NOSE MOVED QUICKLY TO A NEARLY VERTICAL POSITION. THE AIRPLANE MAINTAINED THIS ATTITUDE UNTIL IT COLLIDED WITH THE GROUND. THE AIRPLANE BURST INTO FLAMES. (-23) THERE WAS A REPORT OF AN AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT AT 16:06 PM, THE LOCATION WAS AT THE RIVERSIDE LAKES AIRPORT (PRIVATE), IN ANZA, CA. A WITNESS REPORTED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS WEST BOUND ON THE UPWIND LEG OF THE AIRPORT THEN TURNED CROSS-WIND, BEFORE TURNING DOWN WIND FOR LANDING. THE WITNESS INDICATED THAT THE TWIN ENGINE PLANE DID NOT SOUND LIKE A TWIN. THE WITNESS BELIEVES THAT ONE ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING BUT WAS NOT SURE OF WHICH ENGINE WAS NOT OPERATING. THE WITNESS INDICATED THAT HE WATCHED THE AIRCRAFT MAKE A LEFT TURN BACK TOWARD THE AIRPORT, BUT NOTICED THAT IT WAS AT A STEEP ANGLE (APPROXIMATELY 90 DEGREES) AND THEN IT SPIRALED DOWN TOWARD THE GROUND AND CRASHED. THIS EYE WITNESS INDICATED THAT THERE WERE TWO EXPLOSIONS AND FIRE AT THE CRASH SITE. WITNESS CALLED 911 TO REPORT THE ACCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX03FA111](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX03FA111), Mar 11, 2003: Beech 3NM (N14437), Anza, CA, destroyed, 3 fatal. Probable cause: the failure of the pilot to maintain an adequate airspeed resulting in a stall and loss of control.
