## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) "INDUSTRIAL INCIDENT-NO INTENT TO FLY". AIRCRAFT WAS REPOSITIONING FROM HANGAR TO GATE 69B PER UAL MOVE SLIP. TOW CREW CONSISTS OF TUG DRIVER AND BRAKE RIDER. UAL PROCEDURE DOES NOT REQUIRE WING TO TAIL WALKERS. REVIEW OF UAL RECORDS OF MOVE SLIPS ON INCIDENT DATE REVEAL THAT GATE 69B HAD BEEN ASSIGNED TO TWO AIRCRAFT SIMULTANEOUSLY, AN ERROR ON UAL DISPATCH'S PART. LAX-UAL PROCEDURES REQUIRE TOW CREW VERIFY GATE ASSIGNMENT IN TRANSIT. HOWEVER, CONFUSION IN THIS AREA HAD BEEN CAUSED BY SEVERAL PROCEDURAL CHANGES WITH REGARD TO AIRCRAFT MOVEMENT AT LAX. THE TUG DRIVER STOPPED THE MOVEMENT OF AIRCRAFT INTO GATE 69B WHEN HE REALIZED THERE WAS NO MARKINGS FOR A 747 TYPE AIRCRAFT AT THIS GATE, GATE 69B CANNOT ACCOMMODATE A B-747. THE TUG DRIVER THEN NOTICED THE DAMAGE TO THE #4 ENGINE CAUSED BY THE ENGINE HITTING THE AIR CONDITIONING CART THAT HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE THE AIRCRAFT PARKING ENVELOPE. TOW CREW REPORTED THE AIRCRAFT DAMAGE TO UAL MAINTENANCE MANAGER AND TO LAX AIRPORT POLICE, NO DAMAGE TO AIRPORT PROPERTY. AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO UAL HANGAR FOR DAMAGE ASSESSMENT AND REPAIRS. TUG DRIVER AND BRAKE RIDER WERE SENT FOR DRUG/ALCOHOL TESTING AND PLACED ON LEAVE PENDING UAL INVESTIGATION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
