## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(-23) THE AIRCRAFT WAS AT CRUISE WHEN THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A VIOLENT VIBRATION. THE ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN THE AIRCRAFT THEN GLIDED INTO DESERT TERRAIN SEPARATING THE MAIN LANDING GEARS AND DAMAGING BOTH WINGS. INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT PROPELLER FOUND ABOUT EIGHT INCHES OF ONE PROPELLER BLADE MISSING. THE NTSB IIC ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ REMOVED THE PROPELLER TO BE SENT OUT FOR FURTHER INSPECTION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB LAX03LA130](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/LAX03LA130), Apr 6, 2003: Piper PA-28-181 (N8465R), Baker, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: the separation of a propeller blade tip due to fatigue cracking that resulted from improper maintenance repair procedures.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
